Broken jaw and face injuries

Road accidents and falls can break the lower jaw, the cheekbone, or the bones around the nose and eyes. Some jaw fractures can be treated in the clinic chair under local anaesthetic. Others need a general anaesthetic and are treated in a hospital, and which hospital depends on the case. Broken and knocked-out teeth are treated at the clinic.

If the injured person has difficulty breathing or swallowing, is drowsy or vomiting, or has a problem with their vision, go to the nearest hospital emergency department first.

Jaw joint (TMJ) problems

Jaw pain, pain near the ear, clicking, and a mouth that will not open fully often come from the jaw joint. Dr Bajaj first finds the cause. Treatment starts with TENS, ultrasound therapy, trigger point therapy and splints. When the joint is still painful or stiff, arthrocentesis can help: the joint is washed out with fluid through a needle.

Cysts, buried roots and other minor surgery

Dr Bajaj also removes buried or broken roots, cysts of the upper and lower jaw, and small lumps inside the mouth such as a mucocele or a ranula. She does apicoectomy, which is surgery at the tip of a root when a root canal treatment alone has not saved the tooth, and frenectomy for a tight frenum. These are done under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation.

Face swelling from an infected tooth

An infected tooth can make the face swell. When pus has collected, it can be let out through a small cut, which is called incision and drainage and is done at the clinic. Go to a hospital emergency department straight away if the swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow.

X-rays

The clinic has a digital X-ray for single teeth. When a full-mouth X-ray (OPG) or a 3D scan (CBCT) is needed, for example before some wisdom tooth removals or after a face injury, it is taken at an imaging centre.

Sedation

If you are nervous, you can have oral sedation, a medicine taken by mouth that relaxes you before treatment. IV sedation is also available, though most wisdom tooth removals and minor surgeries do not need it. Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?

The area is numbed first, so you feel pressure but no sharp pain. Some pain and swelling in the days after are normal, and most people need painkillers for three to seven days.

Can a broken jaw be treated without going to hospital?

Some can. It depends on where the jaw is broken and whether the pieces have moved. Dr Bajaj decides after examining you and seeing the X-ray or scan.

How many visits does wisdom tooth removal take?

After the removal there are two check-ups, one three days later and one seven days later.
